Thomas D'Arcy McGee was an Irish immigrant who became a Canadian journalist, statesman, and leader in the movement for confederation. He edited Irish papers in New York City and Boston before settling in Montreal, where he started the New Era. McGee was assassinated by a member of the Fenian movement, whose tactics he had denounced, in 1868.
