Born in Kansas, Sally A. Kitt Chappell attended Mills College for two years and then Smith College. Although she has written poetry all her life, her "day job" was as professor of architectural history at DePaul University. Her book ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING OF GRAHAM, ANDERSON, PROBST AND WHITE won the Association of American Publishers award for the best book in architecture and urban planning of 1992. Always interested in the interplay of landscape and culture, Chappell's ground-breaking book CAHOKIA: MIRROR OF THE COSMOS was noted for the luminous prose recounting the history of a place from its beginnings in the Mound Builder period to its contemporary distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007 her CHICAGO'S URBAN NATURE: A Guide to the City's Architecture + Landscape depicted over sixty places where architecture and landscape were conceived at the outset as a single whole. The result transformed Chicago from a metropolis to a cosmopolis. In addition, she has been a contributor to the Travel Section of THE NEW YORK TIMES.
