She Stoops to Conquer (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781161452334)

""She Stoops to Conquer"" is a play written by Oliver Goldsmith in 1773. The play is a comedy of manners that satirizes the social conventions of the time. The story revolves around the mistaken identities and misunderstandings that occur when a wealthy young man, Charles Marlow, visits the country home of Mr. Hardcastle with his friend George Hastings. Marlow is shy and awkward around women of his own class, but becomes bold and confident around women of lower social status. When he mistakes Hardcastle's daughter, Kate, for a barmaid, she decides to play along and stoops to conquer his heart. Meanwhile, Hastings is in love with Constance Neville, who is promised to another man. The play is filled with witty dialogue, hilarious situations, and a happy ending that resolves all of the misunderstandings. ""She Stoops to Conquer"" is considered one of the greatest comedies in the English language and has been performed countless times since its original production.MISS HARDCASTLE. (Alone). Lud, this news of papa's puts me all in a flutter. Young, handsome: these he put last; but I put them foremost. Sensible, good-natured; I like all that. But then reserved and sheepish; that's much against him. Yet can't he be cured of his timidity, by being taught to be proud of his wife? Yes, and can't I--But I vow I'm disposing of the husband before I have secured the lover. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
