Every people keeps a god who is also a mirror. For the Bengalis - for the great delta of rivers where the Ganga unbraids itself into a hundred mouths and pours at last into the Bay - that god is a naked black woman with a garland of heads about her neck and a look on her face that is somehow, impossibly, tender. She is Kali. She dances on the chest of her own husband. Her tongue is out. In one hand she holds a sword still wet from its work, and in another a head she has just cut, dripping; and yet with her remaining hands she makes the two gestures that a mother makes to a frightened child: do not be afraid, and here, take this, it is yours.

This book is an attempt to understand how that came to be. It is a history of a goddess, but it is therefore also a history of a place, because you cannot separate Kali from Bengal any more than you can separate a river from its bed. She was not born in Bengal; her roots run back through the Sanskrit epics and the oldest hymns to a darkness older than any nation. But it was in Bengal that she was raised, argued with, painted, sung to, wept over, and finally loved into the strange and beautiful shape she now wears in the imagination of the world. The central story I want to tell is the story of that raising: how a peripheral, terrifying, blood-drinking deity of the battlefield and the cremation ground was, over roughly a thousand years and with gathering speed in the last four centuries, brought home - domesticated, humanised, sweetened - until she could be addressed as the most familiar person in a Bengali household. Scholars of Bengal, above all Rachel Fell McDermott, have given this process a name, the "sweetening" of Kali, and it will be the spine that holds these chapters upright.

I have written for the general reader - for the traveller who has stood in the press of Kalighat and wondered what exactly they were looking at; for the reader of novels who has met Kali in a hundred lurid pages and suspected there was more; for the Bengali abroad who grew up hearing Ramprasad's songs on a grandmother's lips and never quite knew where they came from; and for anyone who finds that a black goddess with a lolling tongue raises, all at once, every large question a human being can ask about death, about the mother, about fear and its overcoming. I have tried to keep the scholarship honest while keeping the prose alive. Where the learned disagree - and on Kali they disagree about almost everything, from the date of a crucial text to whether a whole murderous cult ever existed - I have said so plainly rather than smoothing the seam.

A word on shape. The book moves broadly through time, from origins to the edge of the modern, and the weight of it falls, deliberately, on the long arc from the ancient world to the end of the colonial period, when Kali did her most consequential growing-up. The reader will find her first in the Vedas and the Mahabharata as little more than a shadow at the corner of the eye; then striding out of the Devi Mahatmya as a fully formed slayer; then enthroned in the Tantras and the Kalika Purana as the supreme reality approached by the dangerous left-hand road; then read, limb by limb, in her extraordinary iconography; then walking the sacred map of the Pithas and settling at Kalighat as a city rose around her feet. After that comes the great Bengali turn - the pandit Krishnananda who softened her image, the poet Ramprasad who taught a province to call her mother, the God-intoxicated priest Ramakrishna who spoke with her at Dakshineswar as with a living woman. And then, in the colonial dusk, she becomes something no theologian had foreseen: the motherland herself, the goddess in whose name young men swore terrible oaths and went to the gallows.
