Jim received over 16 decorations during his career. The most noteworthy was the one for his involvement in the investigation and successful tracking down and capturing all of the members of the BLA, a radical, domestic terrorist group responsible for the assassination of twelve police officers, and the attempted murder and wounding of scores of other police officers across the country. During this investigation one of the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted," Herman Bell, was tracked down and captured in New Orleans by the Major Case Squad. The second man on the "Ten Most Wanted" list was Twymon Meyers who was killed during a shootout with the Major Case Squad. In 1960 Motherway married his first wife Patricia Donahue. They had nine children (7 sons and 2 daughters). When he retired he founded a security company at JFK Airport. The company grew rapidly and expanded over the next few years to major airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dayton, Cincinnati, Chicago, Newark, Miami and Wilton Connecticut.
