Shoe Leather Church: Boots on the Ground Faith was written to encourage believers to be more active in seven primary ministries of the church in order to know God better and to forward the kingdom of God on earth.. The first two chapters on the sovereignty of God and the grace of God give the underlying framework for all ministries. The book springs from the author's wide experience as an active layman in various churches over the decades: Baptist, Presbyterian, Church of Christ, Pentecostal, and Charismatic. He has started evangelism programs in three churches, taught Sunday School, and organized seminars on topics such as '"Handling Objections to the Faith," "Why Does God Allow Evil?", and Church History. He has served as a Sunday School teacher and librarian, as well as a board member in two churches.
The author graduated from Davidson College in 1961, after which he did graduate work in Philosophy at the University of North Carolina on a full scholarship. After three years of study he felt called to seminary and attended Fuller Theological Seminary for two years. He then transferred to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary his senior year from which he graduated in 1969. Later, he earned MAs in History and Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Alabama, where he won several awards, including Outstanding Graduate Student and Outstanding Graduate Thesis for his MA on the Engllish Seekers. He went on to teach at Stillman College full time and Shelton State Community College and the University of Alabama part-time . He has been active in church, being a board member in two churches, Sunday School teacher, and a leader in evangelistic outreach. Later in life he worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. Shoe Leather Church is his fifth book. He is now retired with his wife Dottie and lives in the Auburn Al. area near his daughter and family.
