Shut Up, Sit Down or Get Out!!: Understanding Children Whose Lives Have Been Shaped by Adversity (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189825255)

Shut Up, Sit Down, or Get Out
Three simple words. One life-changing message.

Every classroom has heard them.

"Shut up. Sit down. Or get out."

For some students, they're just words.

For others, they become labels that follow them for years-shaping how they see themselves, how they learn, and what they believe they're capable of becoming.

But what if the child everyone has given up on is simply waiting for one adult who refuses to?

In Shut Up, Sit Down, or Get Out, retired educator and former assistant principal Dr. Edward Avinger Jr. pulls back the curtain on today's classrooms and exposes the hidden struggles that educators, parents, and students face every day. With more than three decades of experience in education, he shares powerful stories that are heartbreaking, inspiring, humorous, and unforgettable.

This isn't a book about classroom management.

It's a book about human potential.

It's about the student who never learned to trust adults.

The child who comes to school hungry.

The teenager carrying trauma no one else can see.

The disruptive student whose behavior is a language few people understand.

The quiet child who slips through the cracks because no one notices they're suffering.

Drawing from real-life experiences, educational research, and lessons learned both inside and outside the classroom, Dr. Avinger challenges readers to look beyond behavior and ask a different question:

"What happened to this child?"

Instead of...

"What's wrong with this child?"

Whether you're a teacher, principal, counselor, social worker, parent, coach, mentor, or college student preparing for a career in education, this book will transform the way you think about discipline, relationships, leadership, and learning.

Inside you'll discover:

• Why relationships are more powerful than rules.
• How childhood trauma affects learning and behavior.
• Practical strategies for reaching difficult students.
• The difference between punishment and accountability.
• Why the best educators teach hearts before they teach minds.
• How small moments can change a student's life forever.
• What every parent and educator should understand about resilience, trust, and hope.

More importantly, you'll be reminded why you chose to care in the first place.

Dr. Avinger's journey, from growing up in public housing surrounded by violence, poverty, and abuse to earning two master's degrees and a doctorate in education, offers a perspective few educators possess. His life is proof that a child's circumstances do not determine that child's destiny. Sometimes all it takes is one teacher, one mentor, one conversation, or one person willing to believe before anyone else does.

Filled with compelling stories, practical wisdom, moments of humor, and deeply personal reflections, Shut Up, Sit Down, or Get Out is more than a book for educators.

It's a call to see people differently.

It's a reminder that every student has a story.

Every behavior has a reason.

Every child deserves dignity.

And every adult has the power to change a life.

Because long after students forget the lesson you taught...

they will never forget how you made them feel.

If you believe education is about more than grades, test scores, and discipline...

If you believe every child deserves someone who sees their potential...

Then this book is for you.
