Signal Gate (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798252266237)

Full bars. No way back.

Talia Reed arrives for the reliability audit the city promised her. Her phone receives every authenticated notice. The screen shows perfect service. But when she tries to answer, her reply is classified as risk before it can reach a human being.

The network is working exactly as designed.

One week after the Forecast Commons rule created a protected path for people to challenge automated decisions, a new direct-service channel is spreading through transit, clinics, and emergency systems. It can reach residents through outages and lapsed data plans. It saves time. It may save lives. Yet the same gate that guarantees delivery quietly decides which replies count as signal and which disappear as noise. The city measures whether its message arrived. It does not measure whether the person can answer.

Fifteen-year-old record keeper Maddy Bennett recognizes a new kind of refusal: one with no locked door and no visible no. With Talia, her older brother Ash, and a growing roster of witnesses and workers, she begins building a two-way record that distinguishes delivery from acknowledgment, and connection from consent. But Maddy's public visibility gives her a route that ordinary people do not have, threatening to turn her into the privileged gatekeeper she has always refused to become.

Inside the Office of Civic Consent, Daniel Mercer understands why the gate exists. Public channels can be flooded, impersonated, automated, and exhausted. Scarce reviewers can be overwhelmed. The protection is useful, and Mercer helped authorize the framework beneath it. As the provisional rule's thirty-day deadline closes in, he must decide whether understanding the harm obligates him to challenge the system he built.

Their paths converge on a live public test with one unforgiving question: Can an institution claim it heard you merely because it reached you?

Signal Gate is Book Four of The Delegation Cycle, G. L. Vance's literary speculative series about artificial intelligence, public power, and the human duty to answer. Tense, precise, and deeply human, it explores the fragile line between service and control, security and silence, connection and answerability.
