Simon Blaise and his cohorts are on their way home, after a month long vacation in South America. On the first night out from port, a passenger; who has had a few drinks, witnesses a woman fall from one of the Stateroom balconies above her. After a two hour rescue attempt, no body can be found. The ship's Captain asks Simon to help him determine if a passenger or crew member did, in fact, fall into the ocean.
During his investigation, Simon realizes that something is wrong, when a complete ID of every person on board the La Fiesta has been made and there is one extra person who is not on the Captain's official passenger and crew list. A second head count just reinforces the first count's accuracy. Rather than having one missing person, the La Fiesta is transporting one person too many.
Eventually, the clues begin to suggest; this mystery may be an elaborate plot, designed to cover up a murder. Simon has three days to find the killer and the extra person, before the ship docks in Miami. If he fails, the killer will get away with murder.
