How to cope with feelings of discrimination, disadvantage or marginalisation at work.

Synopsis

This book tackles how to compete, succeed and thrive in a world where, because of the colour of your skin, your sexual orientation, gender identity or physical or mental disability, you feel that the cards are stacked against you.

Workplace discrimination against women who are of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) origin is thought to be higher than discrimination against all other groups, in that it holds them back financially and from progressing to the upper echelons.

So how does one climb the corporate ladder to land those jobs? What were the lessons I learned from navigating the corridors of power that might work for you? How do you survive, without too many scars, the games of office politics? How do you negotiate pay rises to avoid being underpaid compared to your 'majority' peers? How do you set and achieve your career and life goals at each level? What are the specific strategies that you need to shake off your feelings of being an outsider, hone your skills and unleash your true potential on the world, be that corporate or otherwise?

And, on top of that, what is leadership? How can we lead ourselves in the face of an apparent lack of leadership form the top?

Forging a corporate career spanning leadership roles in finance and strategy for multi-billion pound companies, Sheryl Miller has spent nearly thirty years navigating her way through countless boardrooms.

"I often wonder how did I - a black woman, born in inner-city Birmingham, some of whose earliest memories include hearing the sounds of the 1981 Handsworth riots at the end of my street - wind up as a troubleshooter in blue-chip corporates?

My professional corporate career was founded on seven years at Ernst & Young - now one of the largest accountancy and professional services firms in the world - where I qualified as a Chartered Accountant."

In this book she shares strategies and practical advice that has worked for her and many others, including how to handle office politics, securing promotions and pay rises and finding the work you were born to do. Inside this book you will find the tools, encouragement and support to be the best version of you and Smash It!

This book is perfect for fans of personal development books and those looking for techniques to advance in the corporate and business world. Covering not only professional achievement, it also takes a holistic approach to personal fulfillment and the importance of finding meaning in our work. It would be a perfect addition to any office library and make a perfect gift for managers and leaders aspiring to advance to that next level.
