Mary Whitcomb Keep was born in New Jersey in 1926 to Oliver Davis and Helen Raymond (Whitcomb) Keep. As a child, she spent summers in Maine, and has lived on the coast since her early 20s. She was married to the sculptor David von Schlegell and has three grown daughters and a son with Down's syndrome. Brought up an Episcopalian, she became a Catholic in 1962. Mary lives with her son Anthony near the Marginal Way and Little Beaches of Ogunquit, in the house she summered in with her parents as a child. She has always written poetry.
