Torrey Stephens is an expatriated New Orleanian, currently living deep in the heart of Texas. She has been writing for nearly thirty years. Ms. Stephens lists John Irving, Douglas Adams, Sandra Brown, and Stephen King as her biggest influences. She is an avid fan of the Saints and the Red Sox. Ms. Stephens believes New Orleans is one of those rare places which stirs one's soul. She walks the streets of the French Quarter and rides the streetcars humming a Jimmy Buffett tune. Ms. Stephens was born in Southern California, but spent four of her most formative years living on a farm in the Midwest. After a return to her home state, and three high schools in less than a year, she developed her own gypsy spirit. Since 1987, she has lived in Colorado, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Massachusetts. She has delivered pizza, managed fast food restaurants, sold beer at Mile High Stadium, shoveled manure, herded cattle, worked in property management, been a telemarketer, a reservation agent, a photographer, and a luxury suite attendant at the Superdome. Ms. Stephens chose to adopt New Orleans as her "hometown" after her many travels. She and her family evacuated for Hurricane Katrina and returned shortly afterwards to help in the recovery at her job. About a year later, she and her family returned to Texas where they have resided ever since. Her two children are now grown. She and her partner of 20-plus years still have not set a date to tie the knot. She is hopeful. They return to New Orleans as often as time allows, spending time with friends old and new.
