Spirits & Stars: Alcoholism Through the Lens of Traditional Astrology (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798252537023)

Can traditional astrology see alcoholism in a birth chart?

After forty years of reading charts and two years of sobriety, astrologer Ken Saunders turned the lens on himself - and then on 884 charts of documented alcoholics from the Astro-Databank. What he found challenged some of his deepest assumptions and confirmed others.

Nearly seven in ten alcoholic charts are night charts. The out-of-sect malefic is stronger, not weaker. Mars swings to extremes of dignity and debility. Saturn exalted in Libra appears at rates far exceeding the general population. And some of the signatures he'd sworn were common - Moon in Scorpio, Jupiter in detriment - turned out not to be.

This book bridges two worlds that rarely speak to each other: traditional astrology and the recovery community. Drawing on Hellenistic and Medieval techniques - essential dignities, sect, temperament, profections, firdaria, and transits - it offers a rigorous, data-driven framework for understanding addiction through the natal chart.

Part research monograph, part practical handbook, part recovery memoir, Spirits and Stars includes:

• Statistical analysis of 884 alcoholic charts vs. 4,063 general population charts
• Essential dignity and sect analysis for all seven classical planets
• Timing techniques for identifying crisis points and recovery windows
• A complete guide to reading sobriety inception charts
• The honest corrections where forty years of intuition was wrong

Written with warmth, humor, and the hard-won honesty of someone who couldn't see his own chart until he got sober.

The stars incline. They do not compel.
