St. Leon: A Gothic Novel (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798240862748)

A ruined French aristocrat gains the philosopher's stone and the secret of immortality, only to discover that limitless wealth and endless life may cost him everything.

First published in 1799, St. Leon is William Godwin's sweeping Gothic tale of ambition, ruin, forbidden knowledge, and the terrible loneliness of a man who outlives the world he loves.

Reginald de St. Leon is born to an ancient French name and raised on dreams of chivalry, glory, and honor. Yet his hunger for distinction leads him from the battlefield to the gaming table, where he squanders his fortune and condemns his family to poverty and exile. Then, at the lowest point of his life, a mysterious stranger entrusts him with two impossible secrets: the philosopher's stone, which can produce limitless wealth, and the elixir of life, which can preserve youth indefinitely.

The gifts promise everything St. Leon has lost. Instead, they make ordinary human happiness almost impossible. Bound to secrecy, unable to explain his sudden fortune or unnatural vitality, he becomes an object of suspicion wherever he goes. His attempts to restore his family, relieve suffering, and use his powers for good draw him deeper into isolation, persecution, imprisonment, and violence.

Across the battlefields, courts, prisons, and ruined landscapes of sixteenth-century Europe, Godwin transforms the fantasy of immortality into a profound Gothic meditation on family, friendship, honor, wealth, identity, and exile. St. Leon is at once a historical adventure, a philosophical novel, a domestic tragedy, and a supernatural tale-one whose preoccupations with forbidden knowledge, the limits of human power, and the outcast seeker after nature's secrets strikingly anticipate the imaginative world later made famous by Godwin's daughter, Mary Shelley, in Frankenstein.

This Bell & Brier Classics edition restores St. Leon to its place among the great neglected works of early Gothic fiction. It is Volume I of The Gothic Novels of William Godwin, followed by Mandeville and Caleb Williams.
