St Thomas Becket (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781026015650)

"St Thomas Becket" offers an insightful look into the life, ministry, and eventual martyrdom of one of the most significant figures in English ecclesiastical history. The work chronicles the dramatic transformation of Thomas Becket from a worldly chancellor and close companion of King Henry II into a devout and uncompromising Archbishop of Canterbury. Through this biographical lens, the narrative explores the deep-seated tensions between the English Crown and the Roman Catholic Church during the 12th century.

The account details the escalating conflict that led to Becket's exile and his eventual assassination within the walls of Canterbury Cathedral. By examining his commitment to the rights of the clergy and his spiritual journey, the text provides readers with a vivid portrayal of a man who chose his faith over his sovereign. As a study of historical power dynamics and personal conviction, "St Thomas Becket" captures the essence of a period marked by profound religious devotion and political upheaval. It remains a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the medieval church, hagiography, and the enduring legacy of a saint whose death resonated throughout Western Christendom.
