Stendhal (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025453866)

Stendhal, written by the distinguished scholar Paul Hazard, is a profound biographical and critical exploration of Marie-Henri Beyle, one of the most complex and influential figures in French literature. This work examines the life and intellectual evolution of the man who gave the world masterpieces such as "The Red and the Black" and "The Charterhouse of Parma." Hazard meticulously traces Stendhal's journey from his provincial upbringing to his experiences in the Napoleonic armies and his deep-seated love for Italy, showing how these life events shaped his unique psychological realism.

The book delves into the concept of "Beylism"-Stendhal's personal philosophy of egoism, passion, and the pursuit of happiness-and analyzes how his sharp wit and analytical style challenged the literary conventions of the nineteenth century. As a study by one of the foremost historians of the European mind, this work offers a nuanced portrait of a writer who claimed he would only be understood a century after his death. It serves as an essential guide for readers seeking to understand the historical context and the enduring literary legacy of a man who transformed the modern novel.
