Stewardship in Motion: Leadership Lessons from the CIO's Seat (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798234118394)

Every leader eventually leaves. The question that defines a career is what remains after they do, and whether it grows stronger or quietly weaker once they are gone.

In Stewardship in Motion: Leadership Lessons from the CIO's Seat, Francis Mushi argues that the most consequential leadership is rarely the most visible. It is stewardship under pressure: the quiet discipline of governance, trust, accountability, and continuity that allows an organization to change without breaking. While most leadership books chase influence, disruption, and personal brand, this one is about the harder and more durable work of building institutions that outlast the people who run them.

Mushi writes from inside the role, not above it. Drawing on more than twenty-five years that span accounting, enterprise systems, global consulting, internationally funded development projects, and the Chief Information Officer's seat at a global automotive and industrial coatings company, he turns hard-earned experience into practical guidance. He has lived the results he describes, including an IT turnaround that lifted project success from below 55 percent to the mid 90s. Across twenty-one chapters, he confronts the decisions that actually shape an enterprise: why transformations fail quietly, what great leaders say no to, how governance becomes an accelerator rather than a brake, how to stay calm under pressure, and what it means to lead with accountability now that AI can produce answers faster than judgment can keep up.

This is a book built to be used. Every chapter pairs lived narrative with enterprise case studies, boardroom perspectives, five field-tested leadership rules, and discussion questions, and it closes with a complete instructor and facilitator guide and a board retreat format. It speaks first to the practicing CIO and to the IT leaders, management consultants, and executives who carry responsibility for lasting impact. It is equally at home in graduate business schools and executive leadership programs, where its cases and teaching tools are ready for the seminar room.

For anyone who has ever been measured by what breaks on their watch, Stewardship in Motion offers a different scoreboard. Some leaders chase the spotlight. The best ones build what endures.
