Description
x"Still On Patrol"
From the hand-cranked Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley to the nuclear-age losses of USS Thresher and USS Scorpion, the American submarine story is one of daring innovation, wartime sacrifice, technical failure, institutional reform, and solemn remembrance.
Still on Patrol traces the long and often heartbreaking history of American submarines that did not return. It begins with the dangerous birth of undersea warfare, follows the early U.S. Navy submarine disasters that forced the development of rescue systems, and then moves into the terrible cost of World War II, when fifty-two American submarines were lost in the fight against Japan. These boats hunted enemy shipping, rescued downed aviators, carried supplies to guerrillas, supported fleet operations, and helped win the Pacific War - often at the cost of entire crews entombed beneath the sea.
The story continues after victory, into the Cold War and nuclear age, where submarine danger changed but never disappeared. USS Cochino burned and sank in Arctic waters. USS Stickleback was lost after collision in peacetime training. USS Thresher went down with 129 personnel and forced the Navy to create the SUBSAFE program, one of the most important safety reforms in naval history. USS Scorpion disappeared in the Atlantic in 1968, leaving behind grief, investigation, and questions that remain debated.
This book also explores the meaning of "still on patrol" the families who received telegrams instead of bodies, the bell-tolling ceremonies that keep the lost boats alive in memory, the modern ocean explorers who have found long-missing wrecks, and the ethical duty to treat those sites as protected war graves.
Written in a respectful, readable, and deeply researched style, Still on Patrol is both a naval history and a memorial. It honors the submariners, shipyard workers, civilians, rescuers, and families whose lives were shaped by the most dangerous service beneath the sea.
They are not forgotten.
They are not abandoned.
They are still on patrol. Author Bio
