The ongoing conflict between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the larger international community has only one result: the suffering felt by the ordinary North Korean citizen. Far from helping advance peace and goodwill, United Nations sanctions and political policies only make matters worse.
In Strangling the North Koreans, Finnish entrepreneur Erkki O. Auranen argues for a new approach to the DPRK-one focused on alleviating the North Korean people's suffering. Based on his own experiences in the oft-maligned "rogue state," Auranen describes a nation far removed from that portrayed in Western media.
The ordinary North Korean wants a life of peace and prosperous development-something the weight of sanctions makes impossible. Auranen explores how opening the nation to private entrepreneurship could make this dream possible.
From a candid discussion in the changes seen in Pyongyang since the 1970s to a blunt explanation of the forces influencing the nation's nuclear program, Auranen reveals North Korea's enormous potential. To realize this potential, the DPRK needs relief from the United Nations' draconian sanctions. Provide that relief, and the nation's industry and tourism possibilities are endless-if the rest of the world is willing to give the tiny country an opportunity.
Finnish businessman Erkki O. Auranen first came to North Korea in 1971 in his role as a commercial attaché to the Finnish Embassy in Beijing. He was assigned to oversee Finnish metal industry exports to China and North Korea and was instrumental in selling a paper factory to the DPRK.
Auranen's academic credentials include a master of science in mining engineering. He holds a degree in theology and is ordained as a Lutheran pastor.
Auranen has visited North Korea seven times. He was actively involved in a Finnish relief organization that donates and delivers food to the poorest regions of the world and produces radio and television programs focused on helping the poor and oppressed receive the help they so desperately need.
