Studies in education during the age of the Renaissance, 1400-1600 (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789353607883)

Behind the art, politics and theology of the Renaissance lay a quiet revolution in the classroom. Education quietly remade the Renaissance. In this classic work in the history of Renaissance education, a definitive historical education monograph, William Harrison Woodward traces how new ideals of learning reshaped children, citizens and rulers between 1400 and 1600. Focusing on renaissance humanist education, he explores the rise of the classical curriculum and humanism, the training of character through Latin and Greek authors, and the evolving relationship between church, state and schoolroom. Drawing on letters, treatises and institutional records, Woodward moves from fifteenth-century Italy education in courts and city republics to sixteenth-century European schooling in reformed and Catholic lands. He examines leading teachers and thinkers, including the influence of Erasmus on education and the famous Vittorino da Feltre education experiment at Mantua, while setting them against the wider backdrop of renaissance schools and universities. The result is a rigorous yet accessible scholarly study of education that remains an essential academic reference on Renaissance culture and ideas, as rewarding for general readers with a taste for intellectual history as for education history students, researchers and classic-literature collectors. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
