Sunday By Design: How Growing Churches Master Sunday (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9798997237110)

Growing churches are not doing seven brilliant things. They are doing the same seven small things, every week, until those small things become the standard.

Visit enough growing churches and the surprising part is how unremarkable the list is. The service starts when it says it will and ends when it says it will. The order does not change from week to week. The first five minutes are scripted and rehearsed. A guest cannot leave the building without being known. There is one clear ask, made the same way every Sunday. Somebody reaches out before Monday. And on Monday morning, four numbers get counted. That is the whole list. Nothing on it is clever. Every item on it is a discipline.

52 mediocre Sundays do not compound into excellence. 52 designed Sundays do.

That is the design concept, and it is the argument of this book. Sunday is not a series of events you survive. It is a system, and systems either compound or they leak. The disciplines also ladder. Clock discipline is what makes a locked format possible. A locked format is what makes the first five minutes scriptable. A scripted opening is what earns you a guest's information. Guest capture feeds the follow-up. The follow-up feeds the second visit. The second visit feeds First Step. First Step feeds the metrics, and the metrics tell you whether the route is still holding. Pull one switch out of that chain and everything above it slackens.

Run all seven long enough and they stop being tasks and start being culture. You stop enforcing the clock, because your team stops fighting it. Your congregation stops asking what happens here and starts saying this is who we are. That accumulated trust, built one consistent Sunday at a time, is what turns attenders into members, members into disciples, disciples into leaders, and leaders into multipliers. That is what mastery looks like. It is not a bigger idea. It is a smaller one, repeated until it holds weight.

Sheldon J. Andrus III calls that underlying layer the Sunday Operating System, and Sunday By Design is the walkthrough for installing it, one switch at a time:

Each chapter names a belief that is quietly capping your church's growth, takes you into the consulting room conversation Andrus has with the pastor, grounds it in Scripture, and then hands you the audit, the scripts, and the work session that flip the switch. Read one chapter. Do the audit. Run the work session. Implement for four Sundays. Then read the next one.

None of this was theorized. As Executive Pastor at Union Church under Pastor Stephen Chandler, Andrus engineered the systems behind growth from 2,000 members to 15,000 in three years. At The Word Church under Dr. R.A. Vernon, he launched two campuses and redesigned the staff during a season crowned by 40 percent growth in attendance. He now consults with churches across the country, sitting in back rows, clocking services, and counting rooms.

Written for the solo lead pastor who carries Sunday alone, and for the executive pastor, worship director, and next steps leader who need language for what they have sensed was broken but could not name. Structure is not at war with the Spirit. Order creates room for the miraculous.
