Supporting Autistic Children with SLCN in the Early Years: A Practical Resource for Professionals (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781041043072)

This fully revised second edition is an essential resource for anyone supporting young Autistic children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Packed with practical, evidence-informed advice and guidance, it adopts a neuroaffirmative approach that shifts the focus away from changing the child and towards understanding and adapting the environment.

Drawing on Autistic-led research and contemporary theories and concepts, including Gestalt Language Processing, monotropism, the Double Empathy problem, alexithymia and interoception, the book translates key concepts into practical strategies that can be embedded within everyday routines, interactions and educational settings. Helping readers develop a deeper understanding of how and why Autistic children communicate, interact and experience the world around them, the book offers:

• An introduction to Autism and SLCN, breaking down key research into easily digestible chunks
• Detailed case studies and examples throughout
• Practical activities and resources, including planning sheets and activity suggestions
• Easy-to-follow chapters focusing on the classroom environment, communication, social interaction, play and behaviour.

Full of evidence-based practical strategies, this manual is essential reading for staff supporting Autistic children with SLCN in an early years setting. It is also valuable reading for other allied health professionals and parents.
