UNDERSTANDING HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS
Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also known simply as Hashimoto's, is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck, just below the Adam's apple. It plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and many other bodily functions by producing essential hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
In Hashimoto's, the immune system creates antibodies that target the thyroid gland as if it were a foreign invader. This autoimmune response leads to chronic inflammation and potential damage to the thyroid, resulting in a gradual decline in its function over time. As the thyroid gland loses its ability to produce adequate hormones, the body experiences various symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).
