xMy mother, Mrs. Hildred Benson, was an Ardmore, OK history maker. For decades she was a 'Black Owned and Operated Business' owner, member of various African American social clubs in the Ardmore area, and one of the collectors of contributions for the upkeep of two of the local Historic Black cemeteries, Jehovah in Milo, Oklahoma and Hickory in Woodford, Oklahoma.
I named this memoir Sweet Potatoes Every Day because my mother could and would eat them almost every day. She loved sweet potatoes and would always save them as the last thing she ate on her plate!
Each year, Mother made the menus out for family dinner for Thanksgiving and Christmas. You guessed it. We had sweet potatoes as a part of both meals. Sometimes when she rode the bus to visit us in Tulsa, she would bring some sweet potatoes in her suitcase! But most of the time, I usually had them ready to be peeled when she arrived.
In her later years of life, as she aged and her physical ailments became greater, Mother came to live with me and my husband and yes, she would have eaten sweet potatoes every day had we cooked them for her. Most times we did.
I hope and pray this small token will be a history lesson for those who did not know my mother, and a lovely walk down memory lane for those friends and close family members who knew her and kept company with her. I'm sure she kept quite a few of you ladies' hair "fried, dyed and laid to the side", as the humorous African American adage goes.
I thank God for her contributions, not only to my life but the lives of others and hope and pray you will enjoy this little historical look back on the life of my dear, sweet mother.
This is mostly a picture album because I believe pictures say more than words.
