William W. Goodwin (1831-1912) was Eliot Professor of Greek at Harvard from 1860 to 1901, and was the first director of the American School in Athens. This, his most important book, was written for nineteenth-century American students to make available to them the latest European developments in the understanding of Greek syntax, as well as his own original material. It went through several editions between 1860 and 1890, and remains an invaluable resource for scholars of the Greek language.
