I started writing at the age of fifteen after taking my 'O' level early, I completed my first novel, Vive le Difference in 1977, a story set in France about Benson a British agent who breaks up a drug ring in France, sadly the manuscript was lost and Macmillan did not think that children would enjoy fast cars and car chases, Alex Rider had not hit the bookshelves in those days. In 1996, finished my first commercial book, which is now out of print, The Taint Gallery, was published and sold successfully, gaining a cult status. It tells the story of a love affair that was torrid and destined to fail. I write under the name Michael Fitzalan and my first three novels, Switch, a thriller narrated by an American in London, gained great praise at the time, as did Waterwitch, a story of two brothers sailing during the Falklands War. Subsequently, I have quietly been building a portfolio of books, UP, a comical novel about a family about to attend a coronation in Uganda, One, a story of a prep school boy who takes revenge on a school bully, Carom, a thriller pastiche of a Fleming novel, Innocent Proven Guilty, pays homage to The 39 Steps, and Remember the Fifth of November, an historical fiction purporting to tell the truth about Guy Fawkes. I have written an autobiography, Seventy-Seven, which shows the influence of punk, and the post punk fall-out, on a fifteen year old boy. I have also written a biography of a Hungarian miner, Karoly's Hungarian Tragedy, a political prisoner under the communist regime of the forties and fifties.
