Godfrey Alfred Rattigan, CBE, OA, Hon. D. LLB, (1911-2000) was born in the remote goldfields of Western Australia. He joined the Royal Australian Navy as a cadet at the age of thirteen. After leaving the RAN during the Great Depression, he joined the Commonwealth of Australia public service and, in the course of forty years, rose to become one of Australia's most outstanding public servants. His actions while Chairman of the Tariff Board and first Chairman of the Industries Assistance Commission were fundamental to radical changes in the Australian economy in the second half of the 20th century. He was also an inveterate storyteller with an eye and an ear for humorous incidents and comic and eccentric individuals. After his retirement, he wrote an academic history of industry assistance during his time (Industry Assistance: the inside story, Melbourne University Press 1986) and, largely for his own amusement, his own recollections as a series of semi-fictional short stories.
