Teaching Cultural Competence in the Second Language Classroom (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258001047)

The Iceberg Method addresses a critical deficiency in modern language education: the tendency to teach linguistic rules while ignoring the 'invisible' 90% of communication-the values, social norms, and unspoken expectations that govern human interaction. This comprehensive book provides educators with a theoretical framework and a practical toolkit to move beyond 'Culture Fridays' and integrate intercultural competence into every lesson. Drawing on the work of Michael Byram and Claire Kramsch, the book introduces key concepts such as the 3 P's (Products, Practices, Perspectives), pragmatic awareness, and critical incident analysis. It advocates for a shift from the unattainable 'native speaker' standard to the empowering 'intercultural speaker' model, where students learn to navigate the 'third space' between their own culture and the target culture. Through strategies like ethnographic research, telecollaboration, and text-driven sequences, the book empowers teachers to transform their classrooms into spaces of genuine human connection. Ultimately, The Iceberg Method prepares students not just to pass tests, but to flourish as global citizens in a complex, multilingual world.
