"Tell my child I exist", the father screamed to Ahmad while pushing his baby through the fence. A sentence that has been stuck with him ever since. This father was willing to never see his child again if he knew his baby could make it to Western Europe, if he knew his child would have a brighter future. From the outside Ahmad's life in Europe seems like the example of the perfect integrated refugee. But in this book he gives an honest insight in his life since the war started in his beloved Syria. It goes deeper than the stories we have seen on television or read in the newspapers. He shares openly about the struggle between living within two very different cultures. Of adjusting to his new life where the trauma's from the past can be very present. He not only shares his story, but also his questions and lessons that his journey has brought him. This touching story is not only Ahmad's story, it's the story of so many other Syrians that have settled across the world since the horrifying war in their home country.
Ahmad Alsadeq (1995) fled the war in Syria when he was 19 years old. At that time he was an agriculture engineering student at the university of Damascus. He crossed the Aegean Sea to reach Greece where he waited two years before he was relocated to The Netherlands. During his time in Greece he managed to learn the English language and build a big international network because of his volunteer work for different NGOs. In The Netherlands he has his study in robotic system engineering. The year 2022 will also be the year he hopes to receive his Dutch nationality.
