Texas Cut

He refused to pay the town's "visitor's tax." Now he's making them pay in lead.

Ocotillo, Texas, is a prosperous cattle town built on fresh whitewash and absolute fear. The citizens walk with their heads down, handing over envelopes of hard-earned cash to Hector Vasquez-a smooth, tailored crime boss who runs a brutal protection racket with the help of his heavy-handed enforcer, Dutch. In Ocotillo, everybody pays for the privilege of breathing free air.

Then drifter Eldridge Sample rides into town looking for a hot meal and a cold beer.

When Vasquez's men demand the ten-dollar toll for safe passage, Sample politely declines. The resulting ambush on the trail leaves two outlaws dead, the gang humiliated, and Sample with a bullet hole through his favorite hat. Instead of riding away, the drifter turns his bay horse around and rides right back down the center of Main Street to deliver the bodies-and a message.

What starts as a dispute over a ruined hat escalates into a one-man war. Operating from the shadows of the lumberyard and the rooftops of the saloons, Sample systematically dismantles Vasquez's empire. He protects an indebted schoolmarm from Dutch's violent grasp and steals the black ledger that holds the town hostage.

Desperate to regain control, Vasquez offers the lethal drifter a buyout-a "Texas cut" of the entire criminal enterprise. But Hector Vasquez is about to learn that you can't buy a man who only trades in absolute justice.

"You offer a piece of the pie," Eldridge said. "I despise pie. I want the baker."

"So we reach the end of commerce," the boss replied.

"We reach the counter-offer," Eldridge said. "You draw. And we see who goes to hell first."

A masterclass in tension and tactical gunplay, Texas Cut delivers the razor-sharp, hard-boiled dialogue of an Elmore Leonard classic wrapped in the relentless pacing of a frontier showdown. It is a story about the cost of corruption, the limits of intimidation, and the fatal mistake of cornering a man who calculates a gunfight like a geometry problem.
