The American Right: A Christian Shift: From Party Origins to a Faith Driven Conservative Era (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188735104)

The American Right: A Christian Shift traces the long arc of conservative political identity in the United States, showing how a movement once defined primarily by economic restraint and constitutional skepticism evolved into a coalition increasingly shaped by Christian moral conviction, cultural preservation, and spiritual narratives of national purpose. The book begins with the early roots of American conservatism-Federalist caution toward centralized power, Jacksonian populism, and the post-Civil War debates over federal reach-highlighting how these strands formed the foundation of a political temperament centered on limited government, personal responsibility, and suspicion of rapid social change.

As the narrative moves into the 20th century, it examines the rise of the modern Republican Party, the influence of industrial capitalism, and the emergence of anti-communist sentiment that framed the Right as a defender of Western civilization. The mid-century conservative revival-led by figures such as Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley Jr.-reasserted constitutionalism and free-market ideals, but it also opened the door for a deeper moral argument: that America's strength was inseparable from its religious heritage. This conviction set the stage for the transformational alliance between evangelicals and conservatives in the late 1970s and 1980s.

The book explores how cultural upheavals-Roe v. Wade, the sexual revolution, school prayer debates, and shifting norms around family and identity-accelerated the fusion of Christian activism with Republican politics. The Moral Majority and similar organizations reframed political engagement as a spiritual duty, arguing that defending life, marriage, and religious liberty was essential to preserving the nation's moral fabric. This era marked a decisive shift: conservatism was no longer only a policy preference but a worldview rooted in biblical anthropology and covenantal responsibility.

Moving into the 21st century, the narrative analyzes how globalization, economic anxiety, and rapid secularization intensified the Right's emphasis on faith-anchored identity. Many conservatives began to see themselves as cultural stewards resisting moral decline, institutional hostility toward religion, and the erosion of traditional community structures. The book highlights how Christian conservatives increasingly interpreted political battles-over education, gender, speech, and national sovereignty-as extensions of spiritual conflict.
