The Autistic Professor: A Journey through Autism, Nature, and the Power of Special Interests (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798187969487)

The Autistic Professor challenges the traditional 'deficit model' of autism by following the journey of Kendall, an eleven-year-old boy, through the rugged terrain of Zion National Park. Accompanied by his family and his dedicated service dog, Ben, Kendall transforms from a student receiving therapy into a teacher who commands the attention of park rangers and tourists alike. The book introduces groundbreaking concepts like 'The Aquitard Effect' and 'Endemic Range, ' illustrating how nature serves as a unique sensory filter that allows neurodivergent minds to flourish. Through the lens of Kendall's deep interests in geology, biology, and astronomy, the book provides a practical roadmap for parents and educators to move beyond management and toward true stewardship of rare minds. It details the physiological partnership between child and service dog, the power of structured preparation, and the importance of finding the specific 'niche' where a child's expertise becomes their greatest social asset. Ultimately, the book is a testament to the idea that when the environment matches the mind, the student doesn't just adapt-they lead.
