Tanya Zilberter holds a PhD in physiology (health sciences) since 1972. Her PhD thesis concerned neuronal mechanisms of hunger and satiety and postdoctorate studies started with research into control of energy homeostasis. In 2002, Dr Zilberter developed the Banta Diet program based on the macronutrient ratio using the Wilder's formula (1922). This formula is in clinical use since Wilder's times to calculate the meal composition for the ketogenic diet. However, until now, the diet remained either too stringent and almost impossible to comply with at home -- or ineffective. Dr. Atkins successfully modified the ketogenic diet and his program was a tremendous success. However, he admitted that about 20 % of his dieters failed. "We analyzed hundreds of cases of Atkins diet failures, and came to the conclusion that there were mostly two reasons for them" said Dr. Zilberter. "One reason is the illusion (usual for dieters) of complying with diet rules while in fact cheating on them. Another one is more serious. It's the fact that Dr. Atkins left the amount of protein unspecified thus making the true carbohydrate load uncertain. The fact is, counting only carb grams in foods isn't enough. Almost 50% of food protein will be converted into glucose. Without taking this amount into account, one can't tell which biochemical pathway will take over -- the fat burning or fat storing ones. You should also count protein and fat grams -- and their ratios, as well. Banta Diet plan, tried by over 1300 participants since 2002, yielded satisfactory and lasting results in 92% of the dieters.
