Stephen Oscar Bumgarner (1865-1953) longed to be a philosopher, but circumstances of economics and education forced him into the back-breaking life of a farmer; he toiled in all weather behind a plow and horse. Poetry allowed his mind to soar which prevented bitterness of spirit. His humor is evident throughout. These writings reveal his deeply held Christian beliefs, the politics and events of his time, and his love of country, Pike County, family and friends. Mr. Bumgarner labored as a farmer until his health broke, then as insurance agent and elected Justice of the Peace in Waverly, Ohio. The editor is wife of one of the poet's great-grandsons.

Born in Beaver Township in Pike County, Ohio, after the close of the Civil War, Stephen Oscar Bumgarner worked as farmer, insurance agent, and Justice of the Peace. His family had moved to Pike County in the 1820's, descendants of Swiss immigrants who had originally settled in Virginia in the mid 18th century. Stephen began writing poetry in the 1880's and continued to write up until his death in 1953. Some of his poems, plus a history of the people and events of his beloved region, were published during his lifetime in local newspapers, and he contributed a section about his family for a genealogy book by Henry Brill.
