The Battle of Montgisard: The Leper King, Saladin, and the Fight for Jerusalem (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189043437)

In The Battle of Montgisard: The Leper King, Saladin, and the Fight for Jerusalem, Jack Whitaker tells the extraordinary true story of one of the most improbable victories of the Crusades, a battle in which a gravely ill young king led a vastly outnumbered army to defeat one of history's greatest commanders. In November 1177, as Saladin's forces swept through the Kingdom of Jerusalem expecting little resistance, sixteen-year-old King Baldwin IV rode out from Ascalon despite the advancing leprosy that was slowly destroying his body. Against overwhelming odds, the Crusader army launched a sudden attack near Montgisard that shattered the invading force and forced Saladin into a desperate retreat across the desert.

Drawing on medieval chronicles, contemporary Latin and Muslim sources, and the surviving evidence of the campaign, Whitaker reconstructs the political tensions, military decisions, and remarkable leadership that produced one of the Crusader Kingdom's greatest triumphs. From Baldwin's courageous determination to Saladin's rise, defeat, and eventual recovery, he brings to life the commanders, knights, soldiers, and clergy whose actions shaped the fate of the Holy Land during one of its most contested eras.

More than the story of a single battlefield victory, this book explores the fragile balance of power between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the expanding Ayyubid Empire, the enduring legacy of a king who refused to surrender to illness, and the dramatic decade that separated the triumph at Montgisard from the catastrophe at Hattin. It is a compelling account of leadership, resilience, and one of the most overlooked turning points in the history of the Crusades.
