The battles that never took place: Planned invasions, secret strategies and discarded war plans (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798192515372)

What would have happened if some of the most dangerous war plans of the twentieth century had actually been implemented?
The Battles That Never Took Place is dedicated to military operations that were carefully prepared, politically discussed and sometimes worked out down to the smallest detail, but never carried out. The book shows how close the world has been to completely different historical developments on several occasions.
Among other things, the focus is on the planned German invasion of Great Britain, Allied plans to attack the Soviet Union, the American invasion of Japan, Churchill's Operation Unthinkable, the American nuclear war plans of the Cold War, the uncarried out invasion of Cuba and a Czechoslovak plan for a nuclear advance into Western Europe.
This is not just about troop strengths, weapons and marching routes. The book explains the political interests, diplomatic tensions, military risks and logistical problems behind the plans. It shows why governments prepared such operations, what fears and ideas of power determined their decisions, and why the plans were ultimately discarded, postponed or overtaken by political developments.
Readers receive a comprehensible overview of important war plans, which are often little known today. Historical contexts are conveyed vividly and objectively, without presupposing prior scientific knowledge. The book is aimed at history buffs who want to understand how military strategies are formed and how political decisions determine whether secret designs become actual wars.
An impressive journey through the hidden archives of military history and to those moments in which individual decisions determined whether millions of people were drawn into a new war.

Parts of the text have been revised with the support of artificial intelligence. It was used as a tool in structuring, research and linguistic elaboration. The contents have been carefully edited, historically classified and checked for factual consistency. In this way, the book combines modern working methods with the claim to offer a serious, understandable and high-quality presentation.
