Bob Barnaby runs an old drama theater and manages a drama troupe. But the night before they begin their new play Marriage and Divorce, Bob's actors-along with his male and female leads and their understudies-all quite over lack of payment of wages.

Bob is left desperate. Financially, he's on his last legs: theater mortgage, etc. and if he can't put on the show tomorrow, he's finished.

After receiving no sympathy from his girlfriend, Jane, Bob finds his one ray of hope from some blue-collar workers fixing an elevator at Jane's apartment who agree to 'stand in' for the show.
