Description
xCan Latter-day Saints trust the Old Testament?
Many faithful readers approach the Old Testament with uncertainty. They love the Book of Mormon. They trust modern revelation. They cherish the words of living prophets. Yet when they open the Old Testament, questions arise. Has the text been corrupted? Can we trust its transmission? What about difficult passages, apparent contradictions, translation issues, archaeology, authorship debates, and centuries of scholarly criticism? The Book Jesus Trusted by Taylor Halverson, Ph.D., addresses these questions directly and thoughtfully. Rather than asking readers to ignore difficult issues, it examines them carefully and honestly while building a compelling case for confidence in the Old Testament. The central argument is simple: If Jesus Christ trusted the Old Testament, perhaps we should too. Drawing on scripture, history, textual studies, archaeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint, the Book of Mormon, and Restoration teachings, this book explores why the Hebrew Bible remains one of the most reliable and important sacred texts in human history. Inside you'll discover:
- Why Jesus relied on the Old Testament throughout His ministry
- How the Book of Mormon repeatedly affirms and preserves Old Testament scripture
- Why Nephi risked everything to obtain the brass plates
- The role of the Septuagint in early Christianity
- What the Dead Sea Scrolls reveal about textual reliability
- How archaeology continues to illuminate the biblical world
- Honest approaches to difficult questions about authorship, conquest narratives, and textual development
- What Joseph Smith's work teaches about receiving the Bible with faith and understanding
- How Latter-day Saints can read the Old Testament with greater confidence and insight This book does not ask readers to suspend critical thinking.
It invites them to examine the evidence.
It does not ignore difficult questions.
It engages them openly.
It does not claim the Old Testament is free from complexity.
It demonstrates why complexity is not the same as unreliability. For Latter-day Saints seeking a deeper relationship with scripture, The Book Jesus Trusted offers a thoughtful guide to understanding, appreciating, and receiving the Old Testament as the sacred covenant record Jesus Christ Himself loved, quoted, taught from, and trusted. Because the book Jesus trusted is worth knowing. And perhaps worth trusting ourselves.
