The Boy Who Speaks with Light: A Novel. The story of an autistic child and a mother who learns his language (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798185266472)

Chiara, an elementary-school teacher in a town on the Palermo coast, and Marco, an electrician used to fixing everything, fulfill after years of waiting their dream of a child. Leo is born at dawn and from the very beginning shows a particular enchantment with light: the reflections of the old chandelier, the beam of the lighthouse of Capo Zafferano on the sea. At first it is a sweetness: they call him "the sunflower."

With his second year the same fixity reveals another face. Leo does not respond to his own name, does not point to share, uses his mother's hand as a tool. His hearing test is perfect: he hears everything, except his name. The assessment comes, and with it the word - autism. The family finds itself frightened, disoriented, alone: relatives make light of it, the invitations thin out, the loneliness is felt in the midst of others.

The turning point is not a cure. It is a reversal: instead of pulling Leo into her own world, Chiara learns to enter his. Kneeling in the light her son loves, she discovers the first shared glance. Light becomes the bridge, and then the language. There follow the years of the "small, great conquests that are worth twice as much" the sea finally won, the hand that one day takes hold of her not to obtain something, but to invite her to look together.

On the eve of Leo's fourteenth birthday, Chiara writes him a letter - the letter that gives meaning to the whole book, and that the reader reads having by now lived through every line. Leo, in his own way, answers her in the only language they have built together: he leads her to the window, shows her the lighthouse, tells her without words what she has written him all night long.
