Founded as an NBA expansion franchise in 1968, the Milwaukee Bucks quickly transformed from a new team into a championship contender. With the arrival of Lew Alcindor and the addition of Oscar Robertson, the franchise reached the summit in remarkable fashion, capturing its first NBA championship in 1971. That breakthrough established a winning tradition that would shape Milwaukee basketball for generations.
Through the decades, the franchise experienced periods of dominance, fierce rivalries, difficult rebuilding years, and memorable playoff battles. From the championship era of the 1970s and the sustained success of the 1980s to the challenges of the 1990s and the renewed optimism of the early 2000s, Milwaukee continually sought to rebuild its foundation. The development of a new organizational vision, the arrival of a modern generation of stars, and the opening of Fiserv Forum helped usher in another transformative period.
The story reached another extraordinary peak in 2021, when Milwaukee returned to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974 and defeated the Phoenix Suns to claim its second championship. Fifty years after the first title, the triumph gave the city another unforgettable sporting celebration. This book chronicles the franchise's defining eras, major turning points, championship campaigns, rivalries, setbacks, organizational changes, and enduring connection with generations of Milwaukee fans.
