The Consolation of the Gospel: The Great Themes of Lutheran Theology and the Mercy That Runs Through Them (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798172873140)

Luther called it the supreme art: to tell the law from the gospel. One tells you what you owe. The other tells you what you have been given.
The Consolation of the Gospel walks the great themes of Lutheran theology in that light, not as a closed intellectual system but as what they were meant to be: a pastoral instrument for a conscience under accusation.
Twelve parts carry the argument. Scripture as the cradle where Christ lies, and what sola Scriptura does and does not claim. The law and its uses, and the distance between legalism and antinomianism. The hidden God and the preached God, the theology of the cross against the theology of glory, predestination read as consolation rather than threat, and Anfechtung, the assault of doubt, treated as something the tradition knows by name. Creation as gift, the bondage of the will, Erasmus against Luther. Christ, the wonderful exchange, the communication of attributes. Justification. The means of grace, the Church and its ministry, the Christian life, hope, and the unity of Christians.
It closes where it began: with the mercy that runs through everything, including chapters written for the reader who feels nothing and for the one who left.
Written for readers who want the doctrine with its sources and its disputes, and who have been told too often what they owe. With five appendices, and a conclusion on the one Church in the perfect love of God.
