Occasionally, this leads to the birth of a completely new superorganism capable of performing tasks, which previously could not even be imagined. Furthermore, the creation of a superorganism prevents destructive free riders to take advantage of a cooperating group because the group as a whole has now reached a qualitatively higher level of existence. E pluribus Unum. In the process of becoming a superorganism it often becomes necessary for a certain number of individuals to give up their lives. To facilitate such a sacrifice of self interest nature offers these cooperating individuals an exhilarating experience that may include the possibility of numbing their senses through ecstasy.
