xJonathan Walton was raised in upstate New York and the Bay Area of California. He attended high school in Ojai, California, and graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1975. He received an MS degree in plant pathology from Cornell University (1978) and a PhD in biological sciences from Stanford University (1982). He was a NATO postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and worked at the ARCO Plant Cell Research Institute in Dublin, California. Since 1987 he has been a professor of plant biology at Michigan State University in the Department of Energy Plant Research Laboratory. In 1993 he spent a sabbatical year at the University of California, Berkeley. He has published research on fungal toxins and their role in plant pathogenesis, the mechanisms of plant disease resistance, cell wall biosynthesis, herbicide safeners, enzymes for biomass conversion, and cyclic peptides from fungi.
