The Death of Christopher Marlowe (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781169681774)

The Death of Christopher Marlowe by J. Leslie Hotson is a non-fiction book that delves into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the famous Elizabethan playwright and poet, Christopher Marlowe. The book is based on extensive research by the author, who was a Shakespearean scholar and historian.Hotson presents a compelling argument that Marlowe's death was not the result of a tavern brawl, as was widely believed at the time, but rather a politically motivated assassination. He provides evidence that Marlowe was involved in espionage and had connections to powerful figures in the Elizabethan court, which made him a target for those who saw him as a threat to their interests. The book explores the events leading up to Marlowe's death, including his arrest and imprisonment on charges of blasphemy, as well as his relationships with other key figures of the time, such as the playwrights Thomas Kyd and William Shakespeare. Hotson also examines the various theories that have been put forward over the years about Marlowe's death, including the possibility that he faked his own death and went into hiding.Overall, The Death of Christopher Marlowe is a fascinating and well-researched exploration of one of the most enduring mysteries of Elizabethan England. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of theatre, espionage, or the political intrigues of the Tudor era.1925.
