The Devil: A History (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798242583733)

From the serpent in Eden to the witches of early modern Europe, the figure we call "the Devil" has taken on many forms-and served many purposes. Part theological adversary, part political weapon, part cultural mirror, the Devil's image has been shaped and reshaped across millennia to reflect humanity's deepest fears and fiercest desires.

In The Devil, Dr. Erik Gray traces this evolving portrait from its ancient Mesopotamian and biblical roots through the imagination of Dante and Milton, the moral theatre of the medieval stage, and the burning frenzy of the witch trials. Drawing on scripture, folklore, art, and legal history, this work follows the Devil's long career as both tempter and accuser, rebel and jailer.

Included in this volume is a new translation of the complete 1487 Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches) made directly from the earliest surviving edition-the notorious handbook used by inquisitors to identify, prosecute, and condemn alleged witches. Presented here in full, with fidelity to the original structure and language, it offers a stark glimpse into the machinery of fear and the perilous intersection of belief and power. Together, these works offer both a sweeping history of the Devil's image and an unflinching look at one of history's most dangerous manuscripts.
