The Devil's Disciple (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781161461275)

The Devil's Disciple is a play written by George Bernard Shaw. Set during the American Revolutionary War, the story follows the life of Dick Dudgeon, a young man who is known in his community as a troublemaker and an atheist. When the British army arrives in town, they mistake Dudgeon for a local minister and arrest him in his place. Dudgeon is then forced to choose between his own survival and the life of the minister he despises. As the story unfolds, Dudgeon becomes a hero in the eyes of the townspeople and the British army, ultimately leading to a surprising and unexpected ending. The play explores themes of morality, religion, and patriotism, and is considered one of Shaw's most controversial works.RICHARD (seriously). Because it's true. I was brought up in the other service; but I knew from the first that the Devil was my natural master and captain and friend. I saw that he was in the right, and that the world cringed to his conqueror only through fear. I prayed secretly to him; and he comforted me, and saved me from having my spirit broken in this house of children's tears. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
