The Diversion: A Legal Thriller of Small-Town Secrets and Deadly Lies (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798235126862)

She returned to bury her father, not to put her hometown on trial. But when a young man's death is dismissed as an accident, one lawyer discovers that justice in Redbird, West Virginia, may have been sold years ago-and the evidence points to people the town has trusted all along.

Nora Kessler is a former military defense attorney who came home for one reason: settle her late father's estate, sell the house, and leave. Then Denise Marsh asks her to investigate the death of her nineteen-year-old son, Cody, who died after being placed in a court-approved diversion work program at the county's largest employer. The official report calls it a cardiac event. The paperwork tells a different story.

As Nora follows a trail of billing records, sealed court files, and missing medical reports, she uncovers a system built on quiet compromises. A respected judge approved every diversion placement. A struggling town depended on the company accused of exploiting its workers. Every witness has something to lose, and every document raises another question. The deeper Nora digs, the harder it becomes to separate negligence from intent-or justice from survival.

Taking the case means risking the career she rebuilt after exposing corruption once before. It means confronting the unanswered questions surrounding her own father, whose forgotten debt ties her family to the same corporation now standing across the courtroom. With frightened witnesses changing their stories, evidence disappearing, and powerful interests determined to keep the past buried, Nora must decide whether the truth is worth the damage it will leave behind.

The Diversion is a legal thriller that blends courtroom strategy, investigative suspense, and psychological tension. The mystery unfolds through depositions, hidden financial records, reluctant testimony, and the difficult choices made by ordinary people trapped inside an institution that rewards silence. As each layer of the conspiracy is revealed, loyalties shift, motives blur, and every victory carries an unexpected cost.

Set against the fading coal towns of Appalachia, this is a story of corporate influence, judicial power, family loyalty, and the quiet courage required to challenge a system that has convinced an entire community to stop asking questions. The courtroom becomes only one battlefield. The harder fight is deciding how much of the truth people can live with once it finally comes to light.

In Redbird, everyone believes the case is about a dead teenager.

Nora Kessler discovers it is really about an entire town-and what happens when the people sworn to protect it become the ones with the most to hide.
