The Environmental Basis of Society (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025638041)

"The Environmental Basis of Society" is a foundational study in sociology and human geography that explores the intricate relationship between physical surroundings and the development of human civilizations. Franklin Thomas provides a comprehensive examination of how factors such as climate, topography, and natural resources shape social institutions, cultural practices, and historical progression.

The work delves into the theories of environmental determinism, analyzing how geographical conditions influence the physical and mental characteristics of populations. Throughout the volume, Thomas synthesizes various scientific and philosophical perspectives to argue that the environment serves as a fundamental bedrock for social organization. By evaluating historical data and early 20th-century scientific observations, the author assesses the extent to which human ingenuity can overcome or adapt to natural constraints.

"The Environmental Basis of Society" remains a significant text for understanding the evolution of social thought and the long-standing debate regarding the impact of nature on the global stage. This scholarly inquiry offers valuable insights into the origins of anthropogeography and the systemic ways in which the earth's features have dictated the course of human history.
