The Expedition Reframe: From Deficit to Discovery in the Sonoran Desert (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798186908586)

This transformative book follows the journey of Kendall, a fifteen-year-old autistic boy, and his service dog, Ben, as they trade the safety of their Las Vegas home for a scientific expedition into the Sonoran Desert. Moving beyond the traditional 'deficit model' of autism-which views neurodivergence as a series of behaviors to be fixed-the book introduces the 'Field Study Reframe.' This practical framework empowers parents and therapists to view autistic traits, such as hyper-focus and sensory sensitivity, as the precision instruments of a researcher. Through the lens of desert biology and systemic pattern recognition, the narrative provides actionable tools like the Protocol Binder and the Baseline Reset Ritual to help neurodivergent individuals navigate high-sensory environments with confidence. By treating the unknown as a research question rather than a threat, the book illustrates how the natural world's consistent rules provide a unique sanctuary for the autistic mind. It is a call to move from protection to trust, shifting the therapeutic goal from behavioral compliance to intellectual contribution. Ultimately, the manuscript serves as both a heartwarming story of a family's growth and a rigorous manual for fostering neurodivergent excellence in a world not built for it.
