The Flemish Frontier: A Journey Through the Hidden Heart of Northern France (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798184670249)

The Flemish Frontier is a comprehensive exploration of Hauts-de-France, a region often overlooked by travelers but deeply central to the European story. Moving beyond the flat fields visible from the car window, the book uncovers a landscape of profound historical layering. It traces the region's evolution from the fierce Belgic tribes who resisted Julius Caesar to the medieval merchant guilds who asserted their freedom through stone belfries. Readers are guided through the 'Gothic race' for height in Amiens and Beauvais, the somber silence of the Somme and Vimy Ridge, and the industrial grit of the coal basin that powered a nation for three centuries. The narrative dives deep into the Ch'ti identity, celebrating the unique Picard dialect, the farmhouse brewing traditions of Bière de Garde, and the vibrant communal spirit found in the Carnival of Dunkirk. By weaving together geography, military strategy, and culinary heritage, the book reveals a resilient northern character that has repeatedly rebuilt itself from the wreckage of war and deindustrialization. It is an essential guide for anyone seeking to understand the 'other' France-the one defined by the northern light, the Flemish influence, and an unyielding attachment to the land.
